Meet the Team!
Heyyyy Baby Niners! I'm Tamia Spells, the woman behind The Baby 9 LLC. I'm an educator, a member of the Miami Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a native Washingtonian, but most importantly I am the mother of our 2 year old Chief Operating Officer, Tamir Assata.
Tamir is the most important "why" behind this company. As a first-generation college graduate and thus a first-generation Delta, I took pride in one day starting the Delta legacy I grew to learn so much about. I was ready to lace Ms. Assata in the flyest "Baby Delta" and "Future Delta" onesies, only to find that there weren't many options out there. The cutest I found were on Etsy and they all looked the same. I thought to myself, "I guess I'll just have to make it myself." But with a full-time, relatively long-distance job and a baby..who was I fooling?
The vision was solidified for me when Tamir's "GrandGrand" made it her mission to buy her some Bethune-Cookman University Wildcat onesies. Grand Grand was tired of her having Virginia Tech everything (#GoHokies). We raced to the vendors and didn't see any onesies in sight. I knew then that I needed to contribute another option for loved ones looking to drape their newest additions in our culture. The Divine Nine and HBCUs have rich culture, histories, and legacies we should be proud of---and honored to instill in our children.
As an educator, I always enjoyed bringing Black culture and history into the classroom. I enjoyed educating my scholars on HBCUs (even though I didn't attend one) and Divine Nine organizations (even before I became a member). More importantly, they lit up learning about them. They could tell you more history and information about change-makers in various orgs than your typical IG. I brought collaboration, school-spirit, and culture school-wide by founding and organizing an annual Stroll-Off with all of the "Baby D9 Greeks".
My scholars are the ones who placed The Baby Nine on my heart. My baby is the one who made it a vision, mission, and a dream brought to life.
The youth brought me this business and I plan to use it to pour back into them!
